Hair shedding on a GLP-1: why it happens and what helps
Hair loss was reported more often with GLP-1 medications than with placebo in some trials, and it is a common worry in clinic. In most cases it looks like telogen effluvium: a temporary, diffuse shedding that follows a physical stressor, such as rapid weight loss or a sharp drop in protein intake.
Why it happens
Hair follicles cycle between growing and resting. A significant stress can push many follicles into the resting phase at once. Shedding usually shows up two to four months later, which is why people often do not connect it to the cause.
What tends to matter most
- Protein adequacy. Low appetite makes protein the first thing to fall. Hair is built from protein, so the same protein-first plan that protects muscle protects hair. See our protein and muscle guide.
- Iron, zinc, and vitamin D status. Deficiencies are common contributors and are easy to check with labs. Supplementing without testing is not ideal; iron in particular can be harmful in excess.
- Pace of loss. Faster loss is a bigger stressor. Whether to slow the dose escalation is a decision for your prescriber.
- Patience. Telogen effluvium usually resolves on its own within several months once the stressor settles.
When to see someone
Patchy loss, scalp pain or redness, or shedding that continues beyond six months deserves a look from a clinician or dermatologist, because other causes such as thyroid problems or autoimmune hair loss need different care.
Safety information
GLP-1 medications are prescription drugs with risks including nausea, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents. Compounded versions are not FDA-approved. Only a licensed clinician can decide whether one is appropriate for you.
